“In my opinion, too many legislators in Columbia make decisions based on what lobbyists tell them – or worse, because of the special interest money they have taken. I don’t take PAC special interest money and am fully able to focus on doing what works for us in Beaufort County.”
“Gov. Mark Sanford’s “Open Door After 4” meetings are critical to his decision-making process, and I expect the Talk to Tom forums to be the same for me. I need to know where my constituents stand on the issues, and I hope to see and hear from you at one of the forums.”

I have had some experience with SC State government and I agree with your assessment of its often unworkable structure. However, I think you are misguided in using as an example Governor Sanford’s headline grabbing effort to refuse a portion of Federal stimulus money unless he can spend it as he has determined is best regardless of the fact that SC taxpayers will ultimately have to pay the freight. Given the statistics you mentioned regarding our unemployment rate and our schools, I would think we would take all the help we can get. I would support efforts to reform state government, but I would not support anyone who believes that political posturing is more important than alleviating the suffering of many of our citizens.

Tom:
You were quoted as saying “Obviously I have tremendous concern for my friends Mark and Jenny Sanford and their family, but I also have a job to do as an elected official.”
I agree. And to help Mark and Jenny the Governor needs to resign now and see if Jenny has enough forgiveness left for his humiliation of her and the boys to take him back.
Tom, PLEASE try and talk some sense into the Governor!
PS he also needs to quit Promise Keepers (I’m a member0 because he has betrayed everything we stand for).
I was wondering how you would govern on the following issues.
(1)The location of the flag near the capital in Columbia
back on top, current location, moved further away from the capital dome.
(2) The removal of criminal prosecution for patients that use medical cannabis
(3)The implementation of a civil fine to replace a criminal penalty for all small cannabis possessions.
Thank You.
Dear Tom,
I was on the trip to Washington, DC with you for the 9/12 Protest March. Ray Letizia, Elaine Letizia, Betsy Crovo and I sent a letter to the Island Packet about the March and tried to report the numbers of protesters as “over a million”. The Editorial Page Director refused to print the letter unless Ray changed the number to 600,000. Ebba Gamer reported to me that she was given the same ultimatum. our letter was printed but with the 600,000 number. Ebba Gamer also had to reduce the number or the letter would not be printed. This seems to us like undue interference by the Island Packet. Do we have freedom of speech or don’t we? I am wondering what we can do about this, if anything. I would appreciate your thoughts.
Very sincerely and respectfully,
Barbara O’Brien

Tom,
You may not remember, but my wife, Rhetta, an I met you at Charlie and Peggy Payton’s home prior to your election. I am currently having a problem with a VA disability claim that I filed last October. Despite the fact that my stage 4 cancer has been acknowledged to be service connected, I have been denied disability. I flew through Agent Orange during my tours in Vietnam in 1969-1970. I was diagnosed in 1999, treated for two years, and am currently in remission.
Is there any assistance that your office could give me? I filed an appeal over a month ago, but I have not heard from the VA.
Thanks in advance for your halp,
Howard L. Bayne III

I am a Canadian snowbird staying in SC for a couple of months. I read your article in the Island News about flawed development fueled by lobbyist.
You got balls. If you should ever get disinterested in local politics I would invite you to come to Canada to run as Prime Minister. I will raise some funds to have you and your wife visit us for a weekend in Ottawa and see if you like the lay of the land. From there it will be a shoe in as we are desperate for some leadership with a soul.

Sen Tom Davis,
I appreciate your position to oppose the Okate Crossing Project. It is with heartfelt concern that I express my concern to what is going to ’shift’ jobs rather then create new jobs. It is important to recognize the long term impacts of this project rather then the short term gains.
The concern for the deeply impaired Okatie River is particularly important to me. Please continue to look out for the welfare of your community and the citizens of Beaufort and Jasper County.
Please continue to oppose the incentives for the Okate Crossings Project. I appreciate your willingness to protect this area and it’s citizens.
Best of luck
Chris
Tom: I don’t see your name on the list of sponsors of proposed bill requiring Roll Call votes. (#3043 I think that is the correct number.) The bill introduced by Nikki Haley. Since you speak of transparency all the time, I am assuming you are in favor of this Bill. Please let me know. The Oysters were great.
wrong email address on the last email. The above is the correct one.
