A one-minute portion of my plea in the SC Senate a couple weeks ago to sequester a mere 1.6% of the general fund appropriations in order to fund modest individual and small business income tax cuts. My budget amendment failed by a 24-18 vote — even though the body is (ostensibly) controlled by Republicans (27 to 19) — and we ended up growing state spending by 11.9%. Shameful.
SC Senator Tom Davis fights to restore some fiscal sanity in the South Carolina budget during the Senate debate on the state spending bill. He argues that by reducing budgets by 1.6% across the board, we can send money back to the taxpayer where it will be more productive and South Carolina will experience better economic growth as a result.
